Reiki is a method of healing that dates back some 2500 years and was rediscovered by Dr Mikao Usui towards the end of the 19th century. His successor Churjiro Hayashi created a Reiki clinic in Tokyo and declared his successor to be Hawayo Takata. Hayashi and Takata established Reiki in Hawaii in 1937. By 1980 Takata had taught and initiated 22 Reiki teachers throughout the United States and Canada. This process helped set in motion the recognition and use of Reiki world-wide.
This energy is known by many names in different cultures across the globe. Qi in China, Shakti or Prana in India, Ruach by the Hebrews and Reiki by the Japanese. In western cultures the terms such as cosmic consciousness or devine energy are used. It may also be known as universal life force or life energy.
Reiki as a method, is a hands-on healing system for channelling this life force. It is limitless and cleanses and works on all levels of our being. This healing energy will go to the areas of the body and mind in most need of replenishment.
Reiki is given to fully clothed clients and the foundation treatment suggests the hands of the practitioner are placed in different positions on the clients body, but it can be just as effective with the hands in one position. As Reiki does not require complicated techniques, it is easy for practitioners of differing disciplines to incorporate it into any of their fields of speciality.
I believe that Reiki combines the healing power of touch with that of universal life force energy initiating healing at a cellular level and beyond.
